STAFF Q&As
Director of Campus Safety
& Security Bob Sherman
Keeps Shelton Safe
How long have you
worked at Shelton?
I started working at
Shelton in August 2023
after retiring from the
Burleson Police Department.
What are your qualifications?
I served in the U.S. Air Force from 1981
to 1992, with assignments that took
me to Germany, Texas, South Korea
and Florida. I left the service with an
Honorable Discharge and immediately
went through the police academy
at Tarrant County College, where I
graduated as class valedictorian and
was named Distinguished Recruit. I
started my law enforcement career with
the Burleson Police Department in April
1993 and retired in April 2023. Over
the years, I worked as a patrol officer,
corporal, sergeant and served as the
School Resource Officer Supervisor
for Burleson ISD. I also led the hostage
negotiation team, managed the
department’s drone (sUAS) program,
handled Internal Affairs investigations,
worked as an administrative sergeant
and helped recruit new officers. I was
selected as Supervisor of the Year twice
and received the department’s Medal of
Valor and Life Saving Award.
What do you like about your job?
Being able to help Shelton become a
safer place for students, staff, parents
and visitors is what I like most about my
job. The reason I came out of retirement
after only four months was because I
saw the need to implement more robust
security protocols on campus.
What is one of your favorite memories
about working at Shelton?
If you’ve ever walked past my office,
you’ve probably noticed a bunch of
ducks in the window along with several
motivational signs. The ducks are there
to remind people to “Be the Duck.” That
means not letting things get to you. Let
hate, criticism or angry words roll off
you like water off a duck’s back. And
lastly, it means don’t be afraid to jump
in and get your feet wet. Some of my
favorite memories are when students or
staff would come by my office or stop
me in the hallway and ask if they could
have a duck. Over the years, I’ve handed
out hundreds of ducks and I always keep
a few in my pocket, ready to share.
Which of your Shelton colleagues do
you admire and why?
Executive Director Suzanne Stell is
the best leader I’ve ever worked for.
She is passionate, driven and deeply
committed to Shelton and its students.
Her dedication goes beyond words —
she lives Shelton every single day. She
lays out the vision, gives you the tools
and support you need and trusts you
to do the job you were hired to do. She
gave me the space and confidence to
get things done.
What teacher had the most
impact on you and why?
Two fellow staff members, Marvel
Washington and Lyndsey Welch, are
like walking sunshine. They bring a
lighthearted, easygoing and cheerful
vibe to campus every day. You can’t
help but smile when they’re around.

worked at Shelton?
I started on June 1, 2012.
What are your
qualifications?
I have a Bachelor of Science in Business
Administration with a concentration in
Management.
What do you like about your job?
I genuinely enjoy the structure and
problem-solving aspects of my role.
Working with customers, numbers,
analyzing data and ensuring everything
aligns financially gives me a sense of
clarity and purpose. I take pride in
creating procedures and finding ways
to make systems more efficient and
organized. It’s important to me to help
the department run more smoothly and
to support the bigger picture of our
training programs.
SHELTON SCHOOL
What do you like about
working at Shelton?
What I like most about Shelton is
what the school represents in the
community. I love being part of an
organization that is making a real
impact — especially through my work in
the training department. Knowing that
our department helps prepare more
teachers to go out into the community
and effectively teach children using
proven dyslexia curricula is incredibly
rewarding. It creates a chain reaction of
support for students with dyslexia.
Which of your Shelton colleagues
do you admire?
I admire Kelly Van Den Handel,
Shelton’s Chief Financial Officer. She is
not only a strong financial leader, but
also someone who genuinely supports
professional growth. She has offered
guidance and encouragement during
key moments in my development, which
I truly value. It’s clear she cares about
both the success of the organization
and the people who contribute to its
day-to-day work.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I used to compete in amateur ballroom
dancing — sequins, spins and all!
