Course Descriptions
All Courses are 1 hour unless otherwise specified
Art
Grades 5 – 8
Is your child artistic? Does he or she simply enjoy working or learning about a variety of artistic techniques? Discover the
excitement of creating through drawing, painting, and other mediums. Students will participate in creative projects with
an emphasis on individuality in expression and creative problem solving. This class has an additional supply fee of $25.
Auditory Comprehension: Listen, Think, Learn!
Grades 5 – 8
Join us for a dynamic summer course designed to strengthen auditory comprehension skills—the ability to process and
understand spoken language. This engaging class offers targeted practice in essential listening skills. Students will engage
in structured activities including following directions, auditory sequencing, identifying key details and main ideas, recalling
and paraphrasing information, and drawing inferences from context. Each class is packed with interactive exercises,
challenges, and strategies to improve listening accuracy and comprehension in a supportive and engaging environment.
Band - Intermediate/Advanced
Grades 5 – 8
This class is for musicians with at least one year of experience on their instrument. We will move beyond the basic
fundamentals of music performance and technique to focus on pop music and songs. We will expand our range, study
music scales, styles of music, and basic music. We will incorporate music technology through Garage Band and Finale.
Using these programs, band members will create a digital album featuring original and performed music from our time
together. This ensemble is for students who play the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet/cornet, French horn, trombone,
baritone/euphonium, bass guitar, snare drum, or drumset.
Please contact Ken Utz or Jerry Bishop at kutz@shelton.org or 972-499-0831 for information regarding instrument rental or
for questions regarding placement in this ensemble.
Brain Games & Critical Thinking Skills
Grades 5 - 8
This class uses a variety of formats to help students develop essential critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills will
help students develop strategies to make good choices. The class uses the analytical side of the brain to enhance
problem-solving abilities. Students will use critical thinking games and other venues to improve their ability to solve
problems.
Book Report Rescue
Grades 6 – 8
Avoid the last-minute rush to complete those summer book reports. This class will guide students through the
procedures of reading and coding a novel and preparing a book report. This report will fulfill Shelton’s requirement for
the written summer book report. (Not required for new students.) Books will be provided on the first day of class.
Computers in the Shelton Mobile Lab will be available to use during class. Basic keyboarding skills are required. Book
reports will be saved in Google Docs.
Students missing more than two days will be required to do outside work to complete all book report requirements.
