Back to School Prep Week
Grades 7 – 8
9:00 - 12:00
Back to School Prep Week for Shelton students entering 7th or 8th grade is a three-hour class taught by trained Shelton
teachers. The student-teacher ratio will be a maximum of 8:1.
Reading Comprehension: includes direct instruction in comprehension strategies, such as following directions, getting
the facts, detecting sequences, using context, getting the main idea, drawing conclusions, making predictions, creating
imagery, as well as questioning, annotating and highlighting pertinent text while reading, review and practice novel
coding.
Writing: will review, practice and guide students through the process of paragraph writing from brainstorming to the
final product.
Math: will review and drill the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions,
and decimals in preparation for school in August.
Summer Reading Finish Line
Grade 9
9:00 - 12:00
Prerequisite: Students must finish reading the required book for English I before taking this class.
Does your child need guidance as he or she completes their summer reading assignment? The Summer Reading Finish
Line offers students a structured, focused environment in which to complete the written assignment due on the first
day of school. Teachers will review the story, and guide students to complete the written assignment. Daily attendance
is important. Note: Students in Honors English may have a different summer reading assignment not covered in this
class. See the Shelton website for all summer assignments.
Jump Start Algebra I: Building Essential Skills for Success
Grade 9
9:00 - 12:00
Prerequisite: 8th-Grade Math or Pre-Algebra
Master the foundational skills critical to excelling in Algebra 1. This comprehensive class covers key concepts such as
integer operations, solving equations, graphing and analyzing graphs, factoring, simplifying expressions, rearranging
variables, and solving systems of equations using various methods. Equip yourself with the tools needed to confidently
tackle Algebra 1 and beyond! Students will need a TI 84 calculator.
ACT Prep Class
Grades 10 – 12
9:00 - 12:00
Prerequisites: Algebra I and Geometry
Getting ready for the ACT? This three-hour class is designed to help students prepare for the ACT college entrance exam
and will include review and practice for concepts and topics covered on the ACT exam. Students will learn strategies for
taking the exam, take a practice exam, and analyze their answers with the guidance of the teachers. This class includes
one teacher for the math portion and one for the verbal portion.
