Non Credit Course Descriptions
STEM Toolkit
Grades 9-10
This course will give students a comprehensive overview of STEM-related resources that would be beneficial to
their overall learning in any of their Upper School math and science courses. This will be accomplished through
3 focuses: Calculator Camp, Engineering Exploration, and STEM Tech Tips. A TI-84 calculator is required.
Summer Novel Workshop
Grades 9-11
Does your child need guidance as he or she completes their summer reading assignment? The Summer
Reading class offers students a structured, focused environment in which to complete their summer reading
and any written assignment required. Each day, teachers guide and review the reading, keeping students on a
rigorous schedule in order to complete the assignment in three weeks. For this reason, student attendance and
focus are important. Books are provided to students the first day of class. Basic keyboarding skills are also
required.
Note: Students in Honors English may have an additional summer reading assignment not covered in this class.
See the Shelton website for all summer assignments.
Summer Novel Workshop (Online Option – New This Year!)
Grades 9-12
For the first time, Shelton is offering an online option for Upper School students to complete their English
summer assignment. This course is designed for students who want to complete their required English work in
a structured, supported environment—without giving up travel, camps, jobs, or family time. This online option
allows students to take an on-campus credit class or two classes, and have guidance on the summer work for
English. The workshop provides clear pacing, regular check-ins, and guided instruction to help students stay on
track, avoid procrastination, and begin the school year confident and prepared.
