Speech (.5 credit)
8:00 - 12:00 or 12:30 – 4:30
Grades 9-12
This class covers the basic aspects of communication skills. Students learn interactive group
communication through discussion formats such as business meetings, brainstorming sessions, and open
forums. Interpersonal speaking skills are developed through speech presentations. Organizational skills and
methods of effectively delivering ideas through prepared speeches are emphasized in this course.
Urban Homesteading (.5 credit)
8:00 – 12:00
Grades 10-12
In this elective class, students will learn the foundational elements of urban homesteading, including, but
not limited to, gardening, domestic and farm animal raising and care, water management and conservation,
composting, and more. The class will combine classroom instruction with practical, hands-on, outdoor
experiential learning. Specifically, the class will have a more intensive focus on current Shelton-specific
outdoor projects, such as beekeeping, chickens keeping, and fruit and vegetable gardening.
